Instant messaging taken to it's highest level

Well I have been thinking about this topic for sometime and still can't come up with a solid answer why anyone would use this service. As some may know, Virgin America is an airline service that just started flying in the US. The backer to this air-service is a wealthy person from England. Over time this guy has become a billionaire owner of many types of business. What this means is he can see into the future and put his products in place for you to use and pay for.
Well this one has me stumped! What this airline is suppling is all the things you could possibly want to use to communicate to another person while flying with his airline. This means cellphone service, computer plugin's for power and wireless communication. If you don't want to use your own equipment, then they have built in screens where as you can do the following
Play games
Order a meal
Surf the Internet
Or if you really want to chit-chat with someone, you can instant message (IM) everyone in the plane, or one specific seat,
all while flying to your destination.
So here is the puzzlement question. What or why would you IM to a person sitting 3 seats over from you?
Here is my attempt to replicate a IM session between two people. I will use seating placement on the first 2 IM so you understand what my puzzlement is about.

Now basing that all one local IM cost this simple conversation would cost about $2.30 but I am sure their cost are higher. What do ya all think?
Of course the other simple question I have is why order a meal thru the touch screen system. Are they hiring deaf stewardess now for the airlines?
