Bored in Iowa

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa, Jan. 1

A wall of ice built around four Iowa grain silos is again drawing mountaineers from around the Midwest who want to experience a unique climbing adventure.

Don Briggs hoses down the silos at his farm outside Cedar Falls and lets the water freeze into a sheer mountain that stands 70 feet high and is buffeted by brutal prairie winds.

To me, it made perfect sense, Briggs told the Los Angeles Times as the temperature dipped below 20 degrees. The highest point in Iowa is going to be on top of a silo.Briggs doesn't charge his daring visitors, who must use helmets, ice axes and ropes to get to the top. The University of Northern Iowa donated gear that rookies can borrow, the Times said.

Briggs said it takes about 10 minutes to get to the top, although he has done it in as little as three.
